Getting Up Again

Excerpt from Revelation 11:16-19

"We give you thanks, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign."

Reflection by William C. Green

Faith and prayer are no guarantee that we won't run into trouble. Whether it's a personal crisis, trouble with the budget at church, or turmoil in the world, faith can lead us to face head-on issues we’d rather avoid. Prayer can make us persist when it would be less demanding to forget it.

The characters of the Bible, and the church throughout its existence, encounter resistance and persecution, sometimes because of their own sin and failure. The gospel of God's never-ending love is "free but not cheap," as Kenneth Samuel puts it. It's hard to remember and live true to, especially when facing personal guilt and responsibility. When our nerves are on edge, and we're overwhelmed by inadequacy, faith can seem fanciful, incredible to us and to others. Trouble carries more weight. The threat of an IRS audit is more fearsome than a truer day of judgment.

A church sign said, "Don't forget. Everyone you meet today is fighting a battle for his life!" However badly any of us may stumble in our own struggles, hope, or its absence, makes the biggest difference. It's renewed when we remember that when you fall, it's not how you fall that finally counts, but how you get up. Faith and prayer enable us to get up when centered, not on our own worries about failure, but in the strength of that higher power that has already begun to prevail. That's the promise of God.

Prayer

Merciful and mighty God, may I stand in your strength and the hope you make possible. Amen.
