Going Deeper

Bible Excerpt from Luke 5: 1 - 11

"He said to Simon, 'Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.'"

Reflection by Anthony B. Robinson

Simon Peter and his buddies had been fishing all night, but had nothing to show for it. Nothing! Nothing but aching muscles and chilled bodies. "Master," Simon Peter said to Jesus, "we have worked all night long but have caught nothing."

Have you been there? I have. You've worked hard and long and yet it feels as if you have nothing at all to show for it. Your nets have come up empty. You're bone-tired and soul-weary. And yet, it is at just this point that Jesus commands Simon Peter to put out into deeper water and let down his nets for a catch. When he does, the nets are full to bursting.

Sometimes when our own notions of success come up empty or our own ideas of how things are supposed to be are completely spent and exhausted, it gives God a chance to show us another way, a different idea of success and a new vision of ourselves. Sometimes when we're at the end of our rope, there's a reason we're there.

Lord, grant me grace to die to my own definitions of success and be raised up to a new life trusting your call, your power, and your grace. Amen.
